Tall Ships Training & Adventure

Tall Ship Adventures

The harbour’s relationship with Tall Ships started when Ullapool hosted sixteen competing vessels during the 2011 Tall Ships Race.  The weekend was a huge success; am estimated 10,000 visitors enjoyed on-board ceilidhs, marquee dances, barbecues, day sails, island cruises, music and performances by Ullapool & District Pipe Band.  The welcome was so warm and friendships so well established that since then, Ullapool has enjoyed subsequent return visits annually from Tall Ship Wylde Swan.  Other beautiful Tall Ships including Statsraad Lehmkuhl, Christian Radich, Oosterschelde and Atlantis have also been made welcome over the years.  Tall Ship Tecla now returns annually and undertakes fantastic sailing adventures to Iceland, Greenland and other northern islands from Ullapool.  The sight of these sturdy, beautifully crafted vessels sailing into and out of our harbour is truly breathtaking.

Training

Since 2011 the Trust has been proud to sponsor sail training adventure opportunities to our local High School students and to date over 250 local children have experienced the thrill of life on board a Tall Ship on day sail trips (younger students) and longer sail training adventures for older students. The experience for many has proved life enhancing with a number going on to sail full time or return to sailing through their holidays. Funds are raised primarily through the sale of our Harbour Calendar which has proved hugely popular, featuring images from our extraordinarily beautiful local area.

We are currently putting together some plans with our friends at Sail Training Shetland who plan to sail their Tall Ship – The Swan- around some of the western isles.  We’ll let you know more as plans start coming into place.  In the meantime, check out The Swan’s website to follow her remarkable story.
