Tall Ships Training & Adventure

Tall Ship Adventures

The harbour’s relationship with Tall Ships started when Ullapool hosted sixteen competing vessels during the 2011 Tall Ships Race.   The weekend was a huge success; an estimated 10,000 visitors enjoyed on-board ceilidhs, marquee dances, barbecues, day sails, island cruises, market stalls and performances by Ullapool & District Pipe Band.  The welcome was so warm and friendships so well established that since then, Ullapool has subsequently enjoyed annual return visits from Tall Ship Wylde Swan and other stunning Tall Ships Tecla, Statsraad Lehmkuhl and Christian Radich.   The sight of these sturdy, beautifully crafted vessels sailing into and out of the harbour is truly breathtaking.   Since 2012, Wylde Swan has returned annually to to undertake adventure voyages from  Ullapool.  She won’t be here in 2017 as she’s undertaking a trans-Atlantic leg of the Tall Ships race but she’ll be back in 2018.  Tall Ship Tecla has become a firm friend and plans a return visit next year.  As schedules are finalised, we’ll update the events section of the website here.

Training

Since 2011 the Trust has been proud to sponsor sail training adventure opportunities to our local High School students and to date over 250 local children have experienced the thrill of life on board a Tall Ship on day sail trips (younger students) and longer sail training adventures for older students.  The experience for many has proved life enhancing with a number going on to sail full time or return to sailing through their holidays.  Funds are raised primarily through the sale of our Harbour Calendar which has proved hugely popular, featuring images from our extraordinarily beautiful local area.
