Harbour Upgrade 2014/15
Summer 2015 marked the completion of twenty months’ work at Ullapool Harbour to prepare for the arrival of the new Ullapool-Stornoway ferry. The 116 metre Roll On Roll Off MV Loch Seaforth has capacity for 700 passengers and 143 cars (or 20 commercial vehicles) and arrived in Ullapool in August 2014.
Infrastructure on the Harbour has been considerably extended and upgraded to accommodate the larger vessel’s design. Works undertaken include an extension of the ferry berthing pier by 33 metres, a new Passenger Access System (gangway), a second storey extension to the Ferry Terminal Building to support the higher gangway and a new two-lane Linkspan (drawbridge to allow traffic onto the ferry) . Works were funded by Ullapool Harbour Trust and Transport Scotland.
The concrete and steel caisson pier extension was constructed off site and floated to Ullapool. A new fender system was required to cope with the increased tonnage of the new ship. The 60 metre, two-section walkway connects the ship to the passenger terminal. The Trust also hopes the refurbished ferry terminal will become a well-used public space as well as a comfortable stopover point for our many travelling visitors.
